Some have moved to another password manager and miss the word-based option. Others just need one password they can remember.

1Password’s memorable mode strings random words together. On the web tool you can capitalize the first letter and choose whether to use full words.

Our passphrase mode does the same job with more control:

Pick the separator: hyphen, dot, space, underscore or none.

Capitalize words and add a number.

Paste your own word list, such as the EFF long list, a list in your language, or a company-approved list.

One honest note: our built-in list has 198 words, about 7.6 bits per word. Use 8 or more words for anything important, or paste the EFF long list (7,776 words, about 12.9 bits per word). The entropy readout updates to whichever list you use, so you always see the real strength.

Which one has more ways to make a password?

1Password covers PINs and we don’t. If you need a numeric code for a phone, a bank card or a door lock, use 1Password’s PIN mode.

We cover pronounceable passwords and 1Password doesn’t. They’re built from syllables, such as Nemsar49-Vatjin, so you can read one aloud to a guest or type it on a TV remote without hunting for symbols. Each syllable adds about 8.9 bits.

We also make batches of 5, 10 or 20 passwords at once, with the same settings.

How long can the passwords be?

1Password’s app goes up to 100 characters. Ours goes to 64. In practice 64 is plenty. NIST’s guidelines ask websites to accept passwords of at least 64 characters, and many sites cap length well below that. A 20-character random password with letters, numbers and symbols already has about 129 bits of entropy.

Can either one match a website’s password rules?

1Password can, inside its app. Its Smart Password feature knows the rules of many websites and suggests a password that fits them. That’s a real time-saver if you use the app.

Our tool doesn’t know which site you’re on. Instead, you set the rules yourself: turn symbols off, skip look-alike characters, or require one of each character type. Our password requirements pages list the rules for popular services, so you can check before you generate.

Where is the password made?

Private Password Generator builds every password in your browser with
crypto.getRandomValues
, the browser’s cryptographic random number generator. We never receive or save the password. The tool keeps working if you go offline after the page loads, so you can disconnect before you generate.

1Password’s generator page describes the password types and options. It doesn’t say where the web tool creates the password.

Where 1Password is the better choice

1Password is a full password manager. Its app saves what it generates, fills it in on the next visit, syncs across devices and shares passwords with family or a team. Smart Password, PIN codes and 100-character passwords are three more things it does that we don’t. If you pay for 1Password, use its built-in generator for everyday logins.

Use both

Your 1Password account password is the one password you can’t store in 1Password, so you have to remember it. Generate a long passphrase for it here, offline, with 8 or more words from a large list. Let 1Password handle the rest.

Frequently asked questions

Is 1Password’s password generator free?

The web tool on 1password.com is free and doesn’t need an account. The generator inside the 1Password apps comes with a paid plan; the Individual plan is $35.99 a year on the App Store. Private Password Generator is free, with no account and no paid plan.

What is a 1Password memorable password?

It’s a password made of random words instead of random characters, which makes it easier to type and remember. Our passphrase mode works the same way. Add more words for strength: with our built-in list use 8 or more, or paste the EFF long list.

How long can a 1Password generated password be?

In the 1Password app, random passwords can run from 8 to 100 characters, according to 1Password’s blog. Private Password Generator makes 8 to 64. Either is enough: 64 characters is past the limit many websites accept.

What’s a free alternative to 1Password’s memorable password generator?

Private Password Generator’s passphrase mode makes random-word passwords for free, in your browser, without an account. You can choose the separator, capitalize words, add a number and paste your own word list. The entropy readout shows how strong each one is.

Are memorable passwords as secure as random ones?

They can be, if they’re long enough. Each word from the EFF long list adds about 12.9 bits, so six words reach about 77 bits. A random 16-character password reaches about 103 bits in fewer characters. Use memorable passwords where you must type or remember them.

Can I generate a password here and save it to 1Password?

Yes. Copy the password, open 1Password, and paste it into a new or existing login. We never see or keep it, so 1Password holds the only saved copy.

The verdict

If you pay for 1Password, its built-in generator is the easiest choice for everyday logins, and it’s the only one of the two with PINs and Smart Passwords. If you want memorable or pronounceable passwords without a subscription, need a batch at once, or want to see the strength in bits, use Private Password Generator.

Related comparisons

LastPass vs Private Password Generator

Bitwarden vs Private Password Generator

We make Private Password Generator. 1Password’s generator does some things ours doesn’t, and we say so below.
